This is just one of the many castles that are in Wales. This castle has to be the most popular castle in Wales, half of this is down to the fact that it is in the middle of a city and the other half is because its very old.
The really cool cardiff Castle
The Romans were the first to use the castle and it can be found right in the middle of a very busy city. The Normas stepped in to take control and they covered the original fort with ramparts and their own defences. during the course of the next few centuries the castle was always getting the odd improvements. During the 12th century a stone keep was added and within the 13th and 14th a gatehouse a tower (known as the Black Tower) were also added to the gigantic building.
1423 saw the Earl of Warwick add another tower to the west side of the caslte and when the Herbert family moved in they improved it for many generations. However the 17th and 18th centuries saw the castle abandoned and it slowly fell into disrepair.
However all was not lost as in 1766 Lord Mountstuart came into possession of the castle and started to rebuild the place and this work carried on even to his grandson.
1869 saw William Burges take the castle into a major refurbishmen as we was given complete freedom on what to do with the place. This is of course how you will see the castle today.
Nowadays the castle is opened to many tourists and is open every single day of the year apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
